Founder of the Hohenhameln Heritage Association and Dedicated Custodian of Regional History
Herbert Fette, born on 24 February 1919 in Hohenhameln, was by profession a trained farmer and deeply rooted in the agricultural traditions of his native community. Throughout his life, he was committed to preserving rural culture and fostering community spirit.

In 1971, he was appointed “Lord Mayor” in the Carnival Club of Lord Mayors in Bad Hohalia – a title held as part of a cherished local tradition.

His lasting contribution to the region began in earnest in 1979 with the founding of the Hohenhameln Heritage Group, which would later evolve into the Hohenhameln Heritage Association (Heimatverein e.V.). His aim was to keep history alive and to cultivate a consciousness of local origins and transformation.

Under his leadership, the group quickly became an established institution in public life – driven by the conviction that history should not remain confined to archives, but should be made tangible in everyday life.

A landmark moment was the opening of the Hohenhameln Heritage Room (Heimatstube) in 1988. It stands as a visible result of Fette’s many years of collecting.

With great personal dedication, he assembled agricultural implements, tools, household items, and everyday objects from the region – often salvaged from farms that had ceased operations. Over the years, the collection continued to grow, supported by donations from the village community. Today, it includes numerous artefacts from trade, crafts and industry, as well as a rich array of photographs and written records, the cataloguing of which is still ongoing.

Herbert Fette created a legacy that endures. He was not only a founder and organiser, but a passionate guardian of history and a builder of community. His life's work lives on in the Heritage Room and in the continued activities of the association – guided by the belief that "homeland" means not only remembering the past, but also taking responsibility for the future.

Otto Köhler – A Life Devoted to His Village and the Local Heritage Society

Otto Köhler, born on 28th March 1950 at the hospital in Peine, is a true son of Hohenhameln. He grew up on the family farm on Breite Straße No. 78 – known today as “Im unteren Dorfe” – under the care of his parents Karl and Käthe Köhler (née Backhaus). From an early age, Otto was deeply rooted in village life, shaped by the close-knit rural community and the rhythms of working the land.

After attending primary school in Hohenhameln from 1956 to 1960, Otto travelled daily to the Michelsen School in Hildesheim, where he completed his secondary education, receiving his "Mittlere Reife" in 1966. His formative years were steeped in village life – shaped by time spent on his parents’ farm and among the neighbouring farms in Hohenhameln.

Following his school years, Otto embarked on a two-year agricultural apprenticeship, spending one year on the home farm and the second year on a farm in Rüper, near Peine. He passed his agricultural assistant's examination in the spring of 1968. He then completed four semesters at the agricultural college of the Michelsen School, earning the qualification of “State-certified Agricultural Manager” in 1970.

That same year, his father sold the family farm in Hohenhameln and moved the entire operation to a newly acquired farm in Reimerdingen, a village in the parish of Langeloh in the Lüneburg Heath, within the district of Schneverdingen.

Otto remained there for some time, later taking on the role of estate manager at a larger farming business in Bönen-Lenningsen – a village near Unna in Westphalia – which also operated a sauerkraut factory. In addition to traditional sauerkraut, the factory later became known for producing wine-infused sauerkraut.

Even during his years in the Heath, Otto demonstrated a strong sense of civic duty and became an active member of the local shooting club in Langeloh, eventually serving on the committee.

In 1975, he married Gabriele Apel, daughter of Heinrich “Kohlenapel” Apel, a well-known coal merchant in Hohenhameln. The couple had two daughters and are now proud grandparents to three grandchildren.

In 1981, Otto made a life-changing decision. He chose to give up his inheritance of the farm and return to his home village of Hohenhameln. He began a new career in Hildesheim, working for 33 years as a department manager in a medium-sized company specialising in rubber manufacturing and processing, particularly in laboratory work and in the production of rubber bonded with vulcanised PTFE film.

Once back in Hohenhameln, Otto quickly re-engaged with village life. He became involved in local politics, took on responsibilities in the local hunting association (Hegering), the male choir, and the Men’s Shooting Corps (MSC), where he served on the committee for 17 years – including 8 years as First Captain.

In 1995, he was named the 40th Lord Mayor in the local humorous association of “Oberbürgermeister”, proudly bearing the tongue-in-cheek title “Otto von Gummi und Strapsen” – a playful nod to his work in the rubber industry and his good humour.

A particularly significant part of his life has been his longstanding commitment to the Hohenhameln Heritage Society. Otto joined the society in 1986 as Vice Chair. After the sudden passing of then-chairman Herbert Fette in 1992, Otto stepped in without hesitation and assumed the chairmanship – a role he held for 32 years with dedication, foresight, and passion. Under his leadership, the society became a respected institution within the district of Peine.

He brought local history to life through his popular “village walks”, guided tours of the arboretum, and his stewardship of the local heritage room at the school centre. He continues to offer these guided tours even now – sharing his knowledge and love of the village with residents and visitors alike.

In 2024, Otto handed over the leadership of the society to a younger generation, leaving behind a lasting legacy. His tireless commitment, down-to-earth nature, and genuine love for Hohenhameln have left an indelible mark on the community.

Otto Köhler – a true Hohenhamelner at heart, a guardian of local history, and a man whose dedication continues to shape village life to this day

In Honourable Remembrance of Walter Könneker of Hohenhameln

With heartfelt gratitude and deep respect, we remember Walter Könneker – a man whose dedication, integrity, and tireless commitment enriched the lives of many. Born on 21st November 1934 as the eldest of three children, he spent his entire life in Hohenhameln, the village he called home with pride and devotion. It was there that he was laid to rest on 30th April 2022, following his passing on 23rd April.

Walter Könneker was, for many decades, a prominent figure in the public life of his community. As a long-standing member of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), he devoted himself with sincerity and resolve to the concerns of his fellow citizens. His political work was characterised not by empty rhetoric, but by clarity, honesty, and a steadfast commitment to principle – even when doing so meant taking the more difficult path. Integrity and straightforwardness were not mere ideals for him; they were values he embodied.

As a farmer, he tended to his land with both diligence and foresight. For him, agriculture was more than an occupation – it was a way of life. He embraced modern approaches whilst remaining deeply connected to the rhythms of the land and the traditions of his forebears.

Equally remarkable was his lifelong dedication to voluntary service. For many years, he was an active member of the local volunteer fire brigade, where he played a key role in the Spielmannszug, the village’s traditional marching band. Through music, he brought people together across generations, fostering a spirit of camaraderie and mutual support that was the hallmark of his life.

Among his many contributions, Walter Könneker will be especially remembered for initiating the village festival known as the Bründelfete. This beloved event, born of his vision and initiative, quickly became a cherished tradition – one that continues to unite the people of Hohenhameln and celebrate the joy of community. The Bründelfete stands as a living testament to his ability to bring people together and his deep sense of belonging.

Walter Könneker distinguished himself through most earnest and unwavering devotion to the commemorations held in honour of the 850th anniversary of the village of Hohenhameln. In his capacity as mayor, he proved not merely a diligent steward of the festivities, but likewise the principal mind behind the conception of the commemorative stone which, to this day, graces the Zimmerplatz — a solemn and enduring witness to the village’s venerable past. With both foresight and heartfelt regard for the legacy of his native soil, Mr Könneker ensured that the memory of Hohenhameln's long and storied history should be enshrined in a public and dignified manner. In the year of our Lord 1996, he had the honour of unveiling this stone, thereby affixing his name indelibly to the annals of local heritage, and affirming his steadfast commitment to the community he so faithfully served.

Walter Könneker was not a man of grand gestures or self-promotion. He was a man of substance – someone whose word could be trusted, who offered help without hesitation, and who always placed the welfare of others above his own interests. He stood firm in his convictions, and he acted with quiet strength and unwavering decency.

His death on 23rd April 2022 marked the loss of an esteemed citizen, a pillar of his community, and a man of exemplary character. Yet his legacy lives on – in the memories of those who knew him, in the traditions he helped shape, and in the indelible mark he left upon his village.

We bow our heads in gratitude and reverence for one of Hohenhameln’s finest sons: Walter Könneker.

Honorary Fire Chief of the Municipality of Hohenhameln and a Model of Responsibility
Karl Bähre, born on 5 March 1925, was a trained farmer and a man of action—deeply rooted in the community of Hohenhameln and guided throughout his life by a profound sense of responsibility towards his fellow human beings. Beyond his vocation as a farmer, it was above all his voluntary service that defined his life and earned him wide recognition.

His name is closely interwoven with the history of the Volunteer Fire Brigade of Hohenhameln. From 1958 to 1975, Karl Bähre served as the local fire chief, an office he fulfilled with remarkable calm, resolve, and leadership.

During the administrative reform in Lower Saxony in 1974, which saw smaller municipalities merged into the unified Municipality of Hohenhameln, Bähre faced the challenge of coordinating the previously independent fire brigades of the individual villages. Where once there had been municipal fire chiefs, there were now to be local fire officers under a single community leadership—an undertaking that demanded a personality capable of unifying others.

Thus, Karl Bähre became the community fire chief of the newly formed Municipality of Hohenhameln.

With his composed and thoughtful demeanour—as later attested by Günther Becker—he accomplished this task “most admirably.” His tenure was marked by balance, authority, and tireless dedication. As a visible sign of his contributions, Karl Bähre was appointed Honorary Fire Chief of the municipality.

His voluntary service was also recognised beyond the local level: he was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit and the Fire Service Cross of Honour in Gold, the highest distinction conferred by the German Fire Service Association—an expression of profound appreciation for his decades-long service to the common good.
Yet Karl Bähre was not solely a man of duty; he also brought humour and joy to the life of the community. In 1959, he assumed the honorary title of “Lord Mayor” in the carnival association Club der Oberbürgermeister in Bad Hohalia—a role that stood for conviviality, commitment, and cheerful fellowship.

Karl Bähre will be remembered as someone who, in quiet dignity, achieved great things. His legacy within the fire service, in community associations, and in the village itself continues to resonate. With a strong sense of duty, foresight, and warmth of heart, he shaped an era of civic engagement in Hohenhameln—and he leaves behind traces that endure.

Farmer, Coldblood Horse Breeder, and Dedicated Community Volunteer in Hohenhameln
Karl Heinrich Wilhelm Busse, widely known as Wilhelm Busse, was born on 3 January 1910. He was a farmer through and through—deeply rooted in the village of Hohenhameln and shaped by the rural life and work of his time. Following his agricultural training, he assumed responsibility for the family farm, which he not only managed with success but enriched with a particular passion for horse breeding.

As a distinguished breeder of coldblood horses, Wilhelm Busse earned a reputation that extended far beyond the boundaries of Hohenhameln. His powerful draught horses, as well as oxen, were regularly employed in farming—a familiar sight indelibly associated with his name. His breeding work was considered exemplary and robust, reflecting both his high professional standards and his deep affection for animals.

Yet Wilhelm Busse was more than a farmer: he was also an active participant in the life of his community. He served as local fire chief of the Volunteer Fire Brigade of Hohenhameln—referred to at that time as “Commander”—and played a key role in its development. Beginning in 1951, he led the brigade with great dedication and a spirit of innovation.

Under his leadership, the outdated hand-pump was retired; a modern extension ladder was mounted on a vehicle chassis; in 1954, a motorised pump was procured; and by 1956, a foam extinguishing apparatus was introduced—each a significant advancement in fire protection for the region. In this, Wilhelm Busse emerged as a true pioneer of technical modernisation within the local fire service.

He was also firmly anchored in the cultural and social life of Hohenhameln. He took an active role in the carnival society Club der Oberbürgermeister and the local shooting club (Schützenverein), where he was crowned Schützenkönig (King of Marksmen) in 1937—an honour that reflected his deep connection to village traditions.

Wilhelm Busse was among the first to serve as “Lord Mayor” in the carnival society. In 1956, he assumed the title Wilhelm the First, thus becoming the second Oberbürgermeister recorded in the club's annals. It was through his initiative that the insignia of office—such as the ceremonial chain and symbolic council key—were introduced, lending the role a sense of dignity and tradition that endures to this day.

Tragically, Wilhelm Busse died on 22 May 1958 following a workplace accident in Hildesheim—at the age of just 48. His sudden passing left a profound void in his family, on the farm, and within the village community. His wife, Hildegard Busse (née Meier), and their daughter, Gisela Busse (later Könneker), were compelled to assume responsibility at an early stage and continued to run the farm in his spirit.

Wilhelm Busse is remembered as a capable, forward-thinking, and deeply rooted individual. His contributions to agriculture, his pioneering role in the fire service, and his commitment to civic life form the portrait of a man who did not merely inhabit his village—but shaped it.
