The region surrounding Hohenhameln exhibits a striking concentration of medieval juridical monuments, including atonement stones (Sühnesteine), cross stones (Kreuzsteine), and disc crosses (Scheibenkreuze). These markers served as acts of expiation for homicides or as memorials to tragic occurrences, forming part of a legal tradition that supplanted blood vengeance with formal atonement agreements. A particularly high number of such stones are to be found in the district of Peine, with multiple examples preserved in Hohenhameln, Soßmar, and Bierbergen. Some have been integrated into church walls or relocated to churchyards at a later date. One notable example is a restored cross stone in Harber.

These stones functioned not only as commemorations of criminal acts, but also as devotional images or boundary markers, frequently associated with local legends and ritual practices.
